Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the asset management processes that support responsible stewardship of university resources at Virginia Tech. Participants will learn how the university's Chart of Accounts and account codes classify financial transactions, support accurate financial reporting, and ensure expenditures are routed through the appropriate approval processes. The curriculum also introduces the principles of fixed asset management, including departmental responsibilities for asset acquisitions, inventories, disposals, and record maintenance, while emphasizing the importance of accountability and compliance throughout the asset lifecycle.
In addition, participants will gain an understanding of the Home Authorization process and the electronic tools used to document university equipment and non-equipment items taken off campus. The course explores the roles and responsibilities of employees, equipment coordinators, department heads, and approvers, along with the systems and resources that support effective asset tracking and oversight.
Upon completion of the course, participants will have a foundational understanding of account code selection, fixed asset management, and equipment accountability, enabling them to support accurate financial reporting, maintain compliance with university policies, and effectively manage university resources.
