Course Description:
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the payroll systems, processes, and policies that support accurate and compliant payroll administration at Virginia Tech. Participants will explore the procedures, roles, and responsibilities associated with payroll processing, Banner Time Entry, labor redistributions, wage employment, employee classifications, and payroll-related compliance requirements.
The curriculum emphasizes the importance of accurate time reporting, payroll funding, approvals, internal controls, and financial stewardship throughout the payroll lifecycle. Participants will gain an understanding of role-based responsibilities within Banner Time Entry, including employee, approver, proxy, and superuser functions, as well as the procedures for initiating and approving labor redistributions. Additional modules introduce payroll fundamentals, wage employee administration, and foundational U.S. tax concepts that support payroll processing and regulatory compliance.
Throughout the course, participants will become familiar with university policies, systems, terminology, and resources that support payroll administration while learning best practices for maintaining accurate payroll records, ensuring compliance, and supporting effective workforce management.
Upon completion of the course, participants will have the foundational knowledge needed to navigate payroll systems, perform role-specific payroll responsibilities, support accurate payroll transactions, and contribute to compliant and efficient payroll operations across the university.
Certificate Credits Available
Each module is self-paced, takes between 30 minutes to one hour to complete, and concludes with a quiz. Participants must achieve a score of 80% or higher on each quiz to successfully complete a module. Each training is worth one certificate credit toward the Fiscal Training and Development Program.
