Description:
The Tax Compliance Team provides guidance and training on U.S. and international tax responsibilities to help students, employees, and other stakeholders understand and meet their income tax obligations. This course includes five modules designed to give you a clear overview of the tax compliance process and helps you understand key requirements.
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the payroll, tax, and compliance requirements associated with employing and making payments to foreign nationals at Virginia Tech. Participants will gain an understanding of the policies, procedures, and federal regulations that govern international employment, non-employee payments, onboarding, taxable fringe benefits, and U.S. tax obligations. Throughout the course, learners will explore visa and employment authorization considerations, payroll and tax withholding requirements, tax treaties, residency status, tax reporting documents, and federal and state tax filing requirements. The course also introduces the university systems, documentation, and campus resources that support compliant payroll and tax administration for international employees and visitors. Upon completion, participants will have the foundational knowledge needed to confidently support international employment and payment processes while ensuring compliance with university policies and U.S. tax regulations.

Certificate Guidance:
Each module is self-paced, takes between 30 minutes to one hour to complete, and concludes with a quiz. Participants must achieve a score of 80% or higher on each quiz to successfully complete a module. This course consists of 5 modules, each worth one certificate credit toward the Fiscal Training and Development Program. Participants who complete all modules will earn a total of 5 credits.
