Course Description:
This course provides a foundational introduction to sponsored programs administration at Virginia Tech and the role of the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) in supporting the university's research enterprise. Participants will explore the structure and responsibilities of OSP teams, become familiar with the policies, procedures, systems, and terminology that guide sponsored research, and gain an understanding of the sponsored project lifecycle from proposal development through award administration and financial oversight. The course emphasizes the importance of compliance, documentation, and effective stewardship of externally funded resources while introducing the tools and resources available to support research administration. Upon completion, participants will have the foundational knowledge needed to navigate sponsored programs' processes and confidently support research activities in accordance with university requirements.
Certificate Credits Available
Each module is self-paced, takes between 30 minutes to one hour to complete, and concludes with a quiz. Participants must achieve a score of 80% or higher on each quiz to successfully complete a module. This course consists of two modules, each worth one certificate credit toward the Fiscal Training and Development Program. Participants who complete all modules will earn a total of two credits.
