Description:

This course introduces qualitative research designs and equips learners with the knowledge and strategies to carry out rigorous qualitative studies. It contrasts qualitative and quantitative approaches, emphasizing the importance of researcher positionality and reflexivity during pre-fieldwork. Participants explore the defining features of major qualitative methodologies—including case study, narrative, grounded theory, phenomenological, focus, and ethnographic approaches—and learn how to strategically select research settings and gain access. The course also covers non-probability sampling techniques, effective participant recruitment, and best practices for field engagement and data collection through jotting and fieldnotes.
