Description:

Since 2017 the Bamboo Research Group has been operating across campus and within a global collaborative context to explore how BioDesign with bamboo can have a positive impact on the environment globally, and on the pedagogy of Industrial Design locally.  Hauptman will share a series of built design projects, artifacts, tools and technologies that the group is exploring as they chase the ill-use goal of creating elegant, sustainable carbon sinking housing from smart bamboo building systems.  Their work cuts across multiple disciplines and is concerned with design, architecture, plant and wood sciences, engineering and computer science. Recently the lab's work has been included in the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale Italian Virtual Pavilion Sezione del Padiglione Italia, in a recently awarded Student Carbon XPrize.

Speaker:    Jonas Hauptman, Daniel Hindman
