Prerequisites:

  • Basic Unix/Linux shell (e.g., bash) commands and like cd, ls, pwd, rm, mv, mkdir.
  • Basic feel for computer storage. An ARC account and cluster access.

Description:

Knowledge about managing, transferring, and sharing data is important for effectively using both storage and compute resources and for working cooperatively. ARC provides various mounts for locating and managing data, and many methods for transferring and sharing data. Knowing the options will make you more productive as an ARC user. The first half of this workshop will focus on (1) the various storage mount systems ARC has, (2) data permissions including the default settings and when to use which permissions, and (3) best practices for data recovery.The second half of this workshop, attendees will learn about (4) data/file transfer and sharing tools through the command line, Open OnDemand, and Globus and (5) standard linux tools for packaging and compressing datasets and the performance impact that this can have. Workshop materials will be provided for those who register and will include additional tips and best practices for using ARC systems that may or may not be covered depending on time.
