Description:
Learn how OpenRefine, a free and open source tool, can make the process of cleaning data from spreadsheets, surveys and other sources both faster and more transparent. This workshop teaches learners how to import data into OpenRefine and use faceting, filtering, clustering and transformations to identify and correct errors and improve the usability of datafiles. Additionally, learners will practice saving reproducible and reusable workflows and exporting data for use in other software.
This workshop is based on the Library Carpentry OpenRefine lesson and is recommended for anyone who frequently works with messy text or spreadsheet data. No experience is necessary, but learners will need access to a computer with Zoom and OpenRefine throughout the workshop. OpenRefine is free software that is approved for use at Virginia Tech, but may require administrator privilege or assistance from IT to install on a VT-owned computer.
