Description:
Please note that there is only space for 30 people to attended In-person.
Need to use qualitative or mixed methods analysis but never learned (or forgot)? Join part or all of the first Day of Qualitative Research at Virginia Tech!
Workshops throughout the day will cover the basics of qualitative methods, four different qualitative data analysis software packages, and practices for sharing and reusing qualtiative data. We encourage you to come for the whole day, but you can mix and match from the following sessions:
9:00 am-11:30 am Foundations of Qualitative Data Analysis
11:30 am-1:00 pm Lunch break
1:00 pm-2:20 pm Coding, Analysis, and Mixed Methods in NVivo
2:30 pm-3:50 pm Team Qualitative Research in Dedoose
4:00 pm-5:30 pm AI-enhanced Coding in Atlas.ti
All sessions are available in-person at Newman Library or on Zoom and open to anyone, regardless of affiliation or level of experience. We strongly recommend those without previous training or experience in qualitative research attend Foundations of Qualtiative Research before the afternoon sessions on specific packages, as they assume some understanding of coding and qualtiative content analysis as a prerequisite. If you already know what tool you're planning to use, feel free to only come to that session. If you want to see all 3 in action, you're welcome to come to all of them!
All workshops are participatory; attendees will need access to a Windows or Mac computer with relevant software installed. Information on installing and activating software for each session is below. For software questions, please email Nathaniel Porter (ndporter@vt.edu). For more information on the software, visit the Qualitative Data and Analysis Library Guide at https://guides.lib.vt.edu/c.php?g=1366465.
Refreshments for in-person participants will be provided during and between sessions. Lunch is not provided, but a number of restaurants are within walking distance downtown.
If you are an individual with a disability and desire an accommodation, welcome! Please email library-event-accessibility@groups.office365.vt.edu at least 10 days prior to the event.
Session descriptions and additional instructions:
Foundations of Qualitative Data Analysis
This session familiarizes learners with the application of open science principles to qualitative research, with a focus on documents or transcribed text in a variety of data formats. Learners will practice working with secondary qualitative data from the Qualitative Data Repository (QDR) in the free software Taguette and discuss the options and limitations for open research with proprietary qualitative analysis packages, including options for sharing both source data and coded analysis projects. Before the session, please sign up for an account at QDR (click 'Register'). For Taguette, please install to your computer (click 'Install) or sign up for the online version (click 'Try it').
Coding, Analysis, and Mixed Methods in NVivo
This session serves as a practical, hands-on introduction to NVivo, including how to create projects, upload files, create and apply codes, combine survey and qualitative data, use autocoding features, and perform queries and analysis. Before the session, please install NVivo (version 11 or higher). Click 'Free Trial' to set up a 14-day trial if you don't already own NVivo.
Team Qualitative Research in Dedoose
This session serves as a practical, hands-on introduction to Dedoose, including how to create projects, upload files, create and apply codes, and take advantage of Dedoose's collaboration features for team research. Before the session, please install Dedoose. Click 'Sign up' for a free 1-month trial and download the version for your OS.
AI-enhanced Coding in Atlas.ti
This session serves as a practical, hands-on introduction to Atlas.ti, including how to create projects, upload files, create and apply codes, and take advantage of Atlas.ti's OpenAI integration for thematic coding, intentional coding, and document summaries. Before the session, please install Atlas.ti. Click 'Try for Free' for a free 5-day trial and download the version for your OS. You may also use Atlas.ti cloud, but some features will be significantly different.
