Description:
The Virginia Course Material Survey is a project of VIVA, Virginia’s Academic Library Consortium, which in 2021 and 2025 surveyed college students from over 41 Virginia institutions of higher education (n=5,632 and 9,075, respectively). This research included over 1,200 Virginia Tech student responses and covers topics of student purchasing habits, perceived value of course materials, implications of cost-based decision making, food security and levels of worry regarding finances, education-disruptive decisions such as selection of institution, major, and minor, and impacts on Pell-eligible and historically underserved students. Survey findings may be helpful for informing course-material selectors and authors. Virginia Tech findings are derived from aggregated data provided on the institutional level. (Raw data is not made available to institutions participating in the survey.) The 2021 survey was a project of VIVA’s Open and Affordable Course Content Committee’s Virginia Course Materials Survey Task Force. The 2025 preliminary survey results are authored by VIVA and Bayview Analytics.
