Description:
As instructors, we often want our learners to think critically and consider whether data support the assertions being made in media or textbooks. But finding data and designing outcome-centered activities is difficult and time-consuming. This workshop brings together a panel of experts from multiple social science data archives - including ICPSR, QDR, Roper Center, and the ARDA - covering data in sociology, political science, policy, public health, communications, regional and international studies, history, education, and more. Our experts will share about the learning resources that are already available to you and tips for taking advantage of those resources and data in your teaching and learning, as well as taking questions from you.
This workshop will take place on Zoom and is open to anyone, regardless of affiliation. The learning resources being discussed are open-access, although certain archive features may only be available to member institutions (including Virginia Tech).
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Familiarize yourself with open and adaptable resources for data-driven learning
- Identify at least one opportunity to integrate data-driven learning in your pedagogy
