Description:
This workshop introduces the Interactive Elements Intelligent Guided Test (IGT), a feature of the axe DevTools Pro browser extension, which evaluates whether controls expose accurate accessible names, appropriate roles, and states or properties that reflect changes in the interface. Examples include whether aria-expanded changes when a disclosure control opens or closes and whether aria-checked reflects the current state of a custom checkbox.
During the workshop, the instructor will use focused demonstration pages to isolate common problems, including generic or misleading names, missing or incorrect roles, and programmatic states that do not match the visual interface. Participants will follow the wizard’s name, role, and “test another state” steps and see how their responses generate findings. Participants may use the remaining time to begin the homework assignment: completing a full Interactive Elements IGT on the SaaS Provisioning Console practice page and submitting the saved review within one week.
An optional brownbag lunch will be offered during the following week for questions and additional support. The answer key will be shared after the submission deadline. The workshop concludes with an exploration of how generative AI tools can help remediate issues identified during the IGT review, followed by re-testing the updated page.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Define the scope of and complete an Interactive Elements IGT, including adding controls the tool did not initially identify and evaluating each selected control’s name, role, and state.
2. Determine whether an accessible name communicates a control’s purpose, its role matches its function, and states such as expanded or checked are conveyed when the control changes.
3. Save and submit an Interactive Elements IGT review of the practice page, explore generative AI-assisted remediation of identified issues, and re-run the IGT on the updated page.
