Description:
The University Libraries and TLOS will co-host a one-hour "Introduction to Open Textbooks" which includes:
- Discussion of course material perceptions and preferences
- Course material cost impacts on students, especially first-year and first-generation students
- What we mean (and don’t mean) by “open textbook”
- Creative Commons licenses
- Questions about implementation of openly-licensed resources at Virginia Tech
- VT’s guidelines on Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Textbooks
- Logistics of submitting reviews
The workshop is open to faculty and GTAs. Faculty who participate in the workshop and within six weeks submit a brief written review of an open textbook in their discipline will receive a $200 stipend funded by VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia. In order to be eligible for the stipend, registrants MUST also complete this form https://bit.ly/intro-open-textbooks PRIOR to the workshop. [GTAs are welcome to attend but are not eligible for the stipend.]
Open textbooks may be selected from the Open Textbook Library. The Open Textbook Library contains 1,000+ open textbooks that are openly licensed and freely available online.
